Who Are We
Teesside One World Centre is an Education Resource Centre dedicated to supporting learning with a global dimension. Based in Middlesbrough, the Centre was set up by local teachers in 1983. The geographical area we serve covers Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool, Darlington and Redcar & Cleveland. We are part of, and helped to set up, the regional One World Network North East. The Centre provides support and learning materials, not only to teachers in schools and universities but also to Youth, Community and Church groups. Teesside One World Centre is one of about fifty Development Education Centres (DEC's) across the UK sharing the aims to:
- Raise awareness of the links between peoples' lives worldwide.
- Increase knowledge and understanding of the political, social, economic and environmental forces with shape our lives.
- Develop skills which enable people to work together for human rights, social justice and sustainable development.
The services we provide include
- A library of teaching and learning activity packs, photographs, posters, videos.
- Opportunity to affiliated members to borrow these resources.
- Information and ordering service for the sale of resources.
- Newsletter 3 times a year.
- Guidance and funding information on North-South School Linking.
In addition, through the Development Education Association (DEA) we are linked to a network of agencies and organisations working with local communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Pacific; this work informs the resources for an up-to-date global perspective, educating young people to become global citizens for the 21st Century.
What do we do
Our services aim to support educators working in both formal and informal sectors.
- We keep a wide range of teaching packs, videos, posters and background reading materials, journals, and leaflets.
- We run projects in partnership with local organisations.
- We support both individuals and groups of teachers and community workers, providing contacts, information and resources in planning sessions.
- We provide displays of books, videos, etc for conferences, meetings and events.
Teaching packs are linked directly to the National Curriculum for teachers of all Key Stages, 1-4 and post 16, in almost all subjects taught in our schools.
Our wide range of posters covers categories linked to subjects like History or RE and to issues such as Racism, as well as to countries, Pakistan for example.
Videos accompany many of our packs, or link up to the topics in relation to countries or issues.
Funding for the work of Teesside One World Centre comes from a variety of sources. As well as our membership these include OXFAM, UNICEF, Department for International Development (DFID), Tees Valley Community Foundation, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Christian Aid, Unicef and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
